Simms Showers LLP, a growing Northern Virginia and Maryland based law firm, is seeking an Associate Attorney for Civil Litigation practice area. The firm’s practice areas include civil litigation in labor and employment, defense of churches and nonprofits, some First Amendment litigation and religious liberty litigation, as well as contracts, business disputes, and other litigation matters.

Associates with Simms Showers LLP are full-time, salaried employees with opportunity for advancement. This position requires the following:

  • Evaluate potential claims and defenses and develop litigation strategies tailored to each client’s goals.
  • Maintain case files, monitor deadlines, and ensure compliance with procedural rules and court orders.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and draft high-quality pleadings, motions, discovery requests/responses, and legal memoranda.
  • Prepare persuasive briefs and written submissions for state and federal courts.
  • Analyze complex legal and factual issues to provide strategic recommendations.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, providing timely updates, counsel, and guidance throughout the litigation process.
  • Participate in client meetings, strategy sessions, and settlement discussions.
  • Represent clients at hearings, trials, depositions, mediations, and arbitrations.
  • Take and defend depositions, including of parties, witnesses, and experts.
  • Work with opposing counsel to negotiate discovery disputes and settlement terms.
  • Work closely with senior attorneys and partners on complex matters, while taking increasing responsibility for independent case work.
  • Coordinate with paralegals and support staff to ensure efficient case handling.
  • Participate in firm meetings, trainings, and practice development initiatives.
  • Stay current on changes in civil procedure, case law, and practice trends.
  • Contribute to the firm’s professional culture by upholding ethical standards and supporting colleagues.
  • Assist in developing practice resources or thought leadership content (e.g., client alerts, presentations, or continuing education).

Requirements:

  • 1-3+ years of experience in litigation (could include judicial clerkship)
  • VA Bar License
  • Legal writing, analysis, and drafting skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel to different counties/jurisdictions in Northern Virginia

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Jury trial and other court experience
  • Prior judicial clerkship experience
  • Experience in Arbitrations
