Winchester Traffic Violation Attorney

We have all made mistakes behind the wheel. Even the most prudent drivers find themselves in close calls once in awhile. Simply keeping up with the flow of traffic can result in a speeding violation. However, with enough accumulated traffic violations, you may be putting yourself in jeopardy of losing your license or being hammered with incredibly high insurance premiums. A few minor infractions can add up. Each moving violation gets reported to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, which tallies the points against you to determine whether or not you should be allowed to continue driving on the road. Additionally, your insurance company can access the DMV’s records and will drastically increase your payments based on how many infractions you have. Do not just let these tickets go by unchallenged. Many traffic violations can be fought and dismissed due to lack of evidence, contact our Winchester traffic violation attorneys today.

A Single Ticket can Increase Insurance Premiums by an Incredible Margin

A study conducted by Insurance.com, and reported by Forbes, found that a single moving violation can increase your insurance premium by up to 22 percent. This is profound news to those who have previously had a clean driving record, and is only harder on the ears for those who have had multiple traffic violations. The following is a partial list of the study’s findings on auto insurance premium increases.

  • 22 percent increase for reckless driving;
  • 19 percent increase for a first DUI;
  • 16 percent increase for careless driving;
  • 15 percent increase for failing to stop;
  • 14 percent increase for an improper turn;
  • 14 percent increase for improper passing;
  • 13 percent increase for tailgating;
  • 12 percent increase for speeding 15 to 29 miles per hour over the posted limit; and
  • 9 percent for failure to yield.

Points Violations on Your License can Add up Quick

Within a 12 month period you can not get 12 or more points on your license without serious implications. Within 90 days of accumulating 12 points on your license you will be required to pay for, take, and pass a driver’s education class or your license will be suspended. Likewise, if you accumulate 18 points within a 12 month span, or 24 points within a 24 month span, your license will automatically be suspended for a period of at least 90 days. The larger the infraction, the more points awarded for that traffic violation. For example, an illegal turn, improper pass, and improper U-turn are all three points, whereas an improper signal for a stop or turn, failure to yield, and tailgating is four points. While an improper turn may not seem all that bad on paper, improper turns are the leading cause of fatal collisions in Virginia, according to Business Insider, and are punished accordingly. We handle all types of traffic violations and have successfully helped clients retain their licenses and avoid large insurance premium hikes.
