D.C. Cops Look for Reckless Motorcycle Rider

Motorcyclist6

Fairfax County law enforcement officers are working with Virginia State Police troopers to find a motorcycle rider who tore through Northern Virginia in May 2026.

Initially, troopers tried to pull the rider over for speeding on the westbound Interstate 66 Express Lanes near Monument Drive. The motorcycle was last seen on Old Centreville Road near Route 28, officials said. During the chase, the man exited the Express Lanes at Stringfellow Road, where officials said he drove on the sidewalk, nearly hit several cars, and continued to drive at high speed.

Officials said the “heavy-set” man with dreads driving the motorcycle wore a black long-sleeve shirt, black pants, and sneakers. The motorcycle was a black sports bike, with a rounded front and tail end, and two red circular brake lights.

Reckless Driving in Virginia

This criminal offense is far more serious than a simple traffic violation. The law applies to a variety of behaviors that all demonstrate a disregard for safety. Common examples include:

  • Driving 20mph over the posted speed limit,
  • Exceeding 85 miles per hour regardless of the speed limit,
  • Racing,
  • Committing multiple traffic violations at once (e.g. speeding and changing lanes without signaling),
  • Passing a stopped school bus, and
  • Driving in a manner that endangers life, safety, or property.

Since reckless driving is a Class 1 misdemeanor, the consequences can be severe. A conviction may lead to penalties including fines of up to $2,500, up to 12 months in jail, and automatic drivers’ license suspension. Additionally, drivers may receive six demerit points on their driving records. Those points, especially since they come all at once, significantly increase insurance premiums. The points also remain on their record for years, increasing the likelihood of future drivers’ license suspension.

Furthermore, police officers aggressively enforce this law, especially in densely-populated areas like Northern Virginia. Then, when these matters go to court, harsh punishment awaits, as mentioned above. These issues are particularly difficult for the many out-of-state drivers who pass through Loudon County and nearby jurisdictions.

A Leesburg criminal defense lawyer breaks down reckless driving cases and identifies all possible legal defenses.

Because of the aforementioned aggressive enforcement, profiling is a defense in many reckless driving cases. Officer Paul may give one person a speeding ticket and another person a reckless driving citation, although they committed basically the same offense.

Incidentally, reckless driving is also an arrestable offense. In these cases, a Leesburg criminal defense lawyer usually obtains reasonable bail, especially if the defendant resides in the area.

Evading Police Officers

Nothing good happens when suspects evade police officers or hinder their investigations. However, police officers are quick to believe that such efforts are deliberate, when in fact, the defendant may be unable to comply or doesn’t comply fast enough to satisfy the officer.

Typically, evading arrest is a Class 1 misdemeanor. Penalties may include up to 12 months in jail, a fine of up to $2,500, or both. However, if the person uses a motor vehicle to flee and does so in a way that endangers others (speeding, ignoring traffic signals, etc.) prosecutors can (and usually do) enhance the charges to a felony. Felony evading can result in significantly harsher consequences, including prison time and long-term impacts on a person’s criminal record.

Unfortunately for Leesburg criminal defense attorneys, lawmakers recently changed the mens rea (mental requirement) in Section 18.2-460 to “knowingly.” Therefore, an inability to comply is usually an equitable defense during sentencing as opposed to a legal defense during a trial.

In other words, a mental defect or other condition can’t get you off an evading charge, but it can significantly reduce the punishment.
